조금은 실험적인 이번 전시의 디스플레이는 화면 속이 아닌 실제로 작품을 마주하는 관객들을 위해 만들어진 장치입니다. 작품을 보러 오시는 관객분들께서는 가까이, 아주 가까이, 또 멀리, 한 걸음, 두 걸음 더 멀리, 마음이 내키는 만큼 다가서고 또 멀어지며 찬찬히 시간을 두고 각 작품 속 장면의 ‘홀로’가 되어보시기를 고요히 권합니다.

전시소개/

CICA MUSEUM에서 개최되는 [Exploding Solitary]는 기존의 전시들에서 보여진 공간 사용 밀도에 비해 확연히 공간의 여백이 두드러지는 전시입니다. 때문에, 도현희 작가의 두 번째 개인전인 이번 전시는 여타 다른 전시에 비해 다소 생소할지도 모릅니다. 

본 전시의 흐름은 도현희 작가의 [Lonesome]시리즈에서 파생되었습니다.  

앞선 Lonesome 시리즈에서 도현희 작가는 마치 ‘오후 1-3시 경 따스한 햇볕 아래 홀로 서 있는 듯한’ 감상을 고요하고 따뜻한 색감과 구성을 통해 그려냈습니다. 한 장 한 장 자연의 재료로부터 만들어 낸 한지를 바탕으로 삼고 그 위에 한국화 안료, 오일 안료 등 오묘하면서도 안온한 톤의 변화를 만들어내는 재료들을 사용하였습니다. 각각의 작품들은 화면 속에서 제각기 화자의 존재가 분명히 드러나면서도 무릇 화자가 선 장면 속 분위기로하여금 시선이 오래 머무르는 장면들을 만들어, 춥지 않은 ‘홀로’의 시간을 전달했습니다. 

이번 [Exploding Solitary] 전시에서는, Lonesome 시리즈에서의 안온함을 약간 생략하고, 폭발하는 ‘홀로’의 에너지를 조금 더 담아내었습니다. 같은 재료와 바탕재를 사용하였지만, 그 속에서 묘사되는 장면은 꽤 다릅니다. 이전 시리즈가 ‘오후의 햇살 아래 서 있는 이’의 경험에 대한 전달이었다면, 이번 시리즈는 ‘바람이 거세게 휘몰아치는 들판에서 허리춤까지 올라오는 들풀에 휩싸이듯 서있는’ 경험을 모티브로 하여금 그려낸 작업물입니다. 여전히 너무 춥지 않은 홀로의 순간이지만, 폭풍전야와도 같은, 혹은 비 온 뒤 갠 약간의 어지러움과도 같은, 그런 뭉그러짐과 또 작고 크게 폭발하는 에너지들을 온전히 담아낸 작품들입니다. 

각 작품의 앞에 섰을 때만큼은 온전히 그 장면 속에 빠져들어 폭발하는 에너지 속 고요함을 느끼는 단 한 명의 개인이 됩니다. 이를 극대화하기위해 전시 공간 속 빛의 조도와 여백을 극단적으로 조절하였습니다.  작품과 작품 사이의 빈 공간은 그저 비어있음이 아닌 더 뚜렷한 유를 위한 무로서 존재하며 전시 내용의 전달에 큰 몫을 합니다.
